International Business Communication Standards

We have standard notation rules in various areas of life. For example, we use musical notes, technical drawing standards in engineering documents, and maps to show relative locations on Earth. However, we do not have a common language developed for business communication. Of course we have reports and presentations; but in every company, in every department, even individually, we use different graphics, colors and shapes in every document we prepare. Therefore, we spend time and time again both to create visual designs and to understand the reports prepared by our colleagues.

IBCS (International Business Communication Standards) was established in 2013 to fill this gap. It is a non-profit organization that aims to create an international common language applied in business communication by proposing conceptual and visual standards

IBCS consists of 7 rule sets and are referred to as "SUCCESS rules", based on the first letters of these sets and can be summarized as;
S AY Convey a message
U NIFY Apply semantic notation
C ONDENSE Increase information density
C HECK Ensure visual integrity
E XPRESS Choose proper visualization
S IMPLIFY Avoid clutter
S TRUCTURE Organize content

How Can We Use Standards?

In corporate life, each employee analyzes data and reports their findings to internal and external stakeholders. Therefore, each employee is a report designer. Compatibility and consistency of these reports produced for different reasons and perspectives can only be achieved by determining company-wide standards and adopting them by everyone.

On the other hand, in addition to the reports prepared by employees, generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) and process automation ( RPA) technologies offer the opportunity to delegate some of the data analysis and reporting tasks to machines. To seize this opportunity, the company needs to establish rules for the characteristics of a good report.

IBCS approach developed with the suggestions of professionals who have worked in the field of reporting for many years; These standards is a guide for managers who are the target audience of the reports, developers who design the reports, business analysts and project managers who organize technological transformation of processes.
